Fantasy Football: Week 2

In week one we learned that Robert Griffin really has a handle on what it takes to be a good quarterback in the NFL. He was nearly flawless and along with rookie running back Alfred Morris, he and the Redskins did the improbable and took out the Saints in the Super Dome. Peyton Manning looked like he just stepped out of 2010 in his performance against the Steelers, while Adrian Peterson unexpectedly returned to action and scored two touchdowns. We can now turn the page on week one of the NFL season and focus on the second week of action, which promises to be as wild as the first!

I’m going to go ahead and call a nice day for Ben Roethlisberger. Ryan Fitzpatrick may not have looked good against the Jets defense, but he’s not Big Ben and as the game wore on Fitzpatrick played better. Tom Brady is at home against the Arizona Cardinals and there is no reason for him not to continue to complete passes at a high rate and hit for at least two touchdowns. If last week was any indication, the Rams may be a bit better overall, but Stafford was able to pile up yardage against them and I expect that Robert Griffin will have another solid day. As usual, you can’t go wrong with Drew Brees, as even on a bad day he throws the ball 35 or more times and that leads to solid numbers for fantasy players. I also see a big day coming for Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers against the Saints.

Seattle did a nice job stopping the Arizona running game last week, but let’s be honest, it was the Arizona running game. The Cowboys and DeMarco Murray will be a much bigger test and I say play Murray if you have him or if you are in a week to week situation, put him in as one of your backs. Murray and the Cowboys offensive line had a big day against the defending Super Bowl champion Giants and look for another 100 yard day and a touchdown from Murray. I’m also a proponent of playing Arian Foster of the Texans almost any week. He had a nice beginning to his season and facing Jacksonville could give him his first 100 yard day and the Texans will run, run, and run some more once they get a lead.

At receiver, I am going to suggest Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons as a top play. He impressed all preseason and came out in week one with two touchdowns and looks as though he is Matt Ryan’s new favorite weapon. Andrew Luck kept going back to Reggie Wayne again and again last Sunday and I don’t expect that to change. Wayne is a reliable option for Luck and always seems to be open. Another receiver to think about is Steve Smith of the Panthers. He has a knack for making big plays against top competition and I think he and Cam Newton will pair up nicely on Sunday.
